The EDM gods at Magnetic Magazine were kind enough to write about the launch of my new label, FunKontrol. Check it out here – http://www.magneticmag.com/2013/07/edm-news-funkontrol-releases-july-4th-compilation-of-remixes-perfect-for-the-bbq-or-pool-party/
I have been working with Legitmix, a groundbreaking new platform that allows DJs and Remixers to sell derivative and sampled content legally, without clearance from the copyright holders. As a part of my efforts, I decided to start a boutique label/store called FunKontrol. To celebrate the release, we put together a compilation of exclusive tracks from a number of our artists including DJ Enferno, Terry Urban, Hohme, DJ Scene, DJ Serafin, eSenTRIK, DJ Starski, Solidisco, DJ Prime, DJ Yonny and yours truly. I am obviously very excited about FunKontrol, as I really believe it is a game changer for artists like myself, who constantly deal with takedowns, cease and desist notices etc. Legitmix has allowed us to separate our intellectual property and art from that of the copyright holder, while assuring they still get paid for each and every purchase. It is a true win/win. Listen to my track HERE –

The Rub’s first EP of original music was released earlier this month, and the duo approached a handful of their favorite producer friends to remix the four songs. They asked The Melker Project to re-rub “Black And White” (featuring singer Tatiana Owens and rapper Bigg Base), the most radio-friendly tune of the EP. Having made a big splash with vinyl-only bootleg remixes themselves in the early-mid 2000s, The Rub guys encouraged Melker to use samples to come up with a throwback party jam. Melker paired up the original vocals with a loop of the Toto classic “Georgy Porgy,” along with a snappy drum kit for maximum bump. The sample was too expensive to clear, so The Melker Project and The Rub partnered up with Legitmix.com to legally release the remix. The track can be downloaded for free, as long as the consumer owns or buys the original sample (Georgy Porgy).

Since we’ve been talking about Drake (I have, at least), I thought I would share this photo. I have no issue with the Degrassi Kingpin… his music is fine, he seems like a decent guy. However, I always feel it necessary to call out discrepancies that I see in the music world. For example, when I saw Rick Ross sitting coach on a JetBlue flight, I felt compelled to point out the bipolarity of his reality (that day, at least) and his lyrics (he also was picked up in a beat up Chrysler, but that’s neither here nor there). So Drake – if you really want “no new friends,” then maybe you should only be photographed with your parents and childhood buddies. And maybe you should stop doing songs with new artists – they count as new friends too, right? I mean, damn, how did you even make a career in music without making any new friends along the way? I guess you were lucky to have grown up next door to DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, Lebron James and others. I didn’t even know they were Canadian! Ay hoser!?
Drake “started from the bottom.” Apparently, in Canada, “the bottom” is Degrassi Junior High. If only this scene had been real.
As for being “here,” apparently “here” is OUTSIDE the locker room at the Miami Heat Championship game, wearing a wounded expression. I guess even “Drizzy Drake” gets denied every once in a while. Enjoy the video HERE.
