I love a good story about remixes or mashups making it into the mainstream – and what could be more mainstream than the Olympics? Although the art form is widely considered illegal or bootleg, it is nice to see these tracks finding their way into the public realm.
UK STREET ARTISTS PROTESTING THE OLYMPICS
I am not particularly concerned with the politics surrounding the corporatization of the Olympics. However, I always admire when artists find innovative ways to express themselves – and when Banksy steps into the arena, it always catches my attention. Check out THIS ARTICLE in Mass Appeal, which shows some of the best Olympic protest art that is springing up around England.
Yuna – Live Your Life (DJ Ayres and Scott Melker remix)
DJ Ayres gave me a ring and asked me if I wanted to work on a remix with him for The Fader. I said yes. They sent us over the new Yuna track, Live Your Life (produced by Pharrell). We decided to do something completely different with it. The blog world seems to like it. LISTEN HERE. It’s not very “Melker Project,” but I’m happy with it!

3 Rappers, One Interview, Zero Complete Sentences
I came across this video on hypebeast this morning. Since I, like everyone else, am a fan of “Mercy,” I figured I would take a few moments out of my day to watch the interview with the 3 non-Kardashian-dating rappers featured on the song. Boy am I glad I did.
What is truly amazing is that, clearly, the interviewer spent a ton of time sitting with Pusha T, 2 Chainz and Big Sean. In fact, she traveled from Chicago to New York with them. In all of that time, she literally could not secure a single coherent sound byte from any of them, making for a wildly disjointed and uninformative piece. They did smoke a lot of weed, which was entertaining I suppose, but the utter level of near-retardation displayed in this video is remarkable. Enjoy.
QUIT SCREWING WITH TRAP MUSIC?
There has been much ado (about nothing, in my humble opinion), about the destruction of “trap music” by (mostly white) EDM producers. I have attached an interview with Lōtic, a somewhat self-proclaimed expert on the subject. The way he speaks, you would think that producers were destroying Chopin Nocturnes and Miles Davis compositions. The fact is, Trap Music itself was a very small genre of hip hop that is now exploding to the masses. As a champion of the sound, I would think that Lotic would be excited to see producers taking Trap and expanding the definitions – which, to me, is what production and remixing are all about. I mean, are chopped and screwed tracks and songs about getting wasted on Robitussin “sacred?” You can judge for yourself…
Mike Tompkins remixes Santigold and Skrillex – with his mouth.
I am pretty sure that I need a late pass on this guy – after watching this video, I realized that his other youtube features have millions of views each. This guy is the white Bobby McFerrin of our generation – with much better technology. Imagine “Don’t Worry Be Happy” with some serious software and a few Novation pads. Check out this video and let me know what you think….
Funny Message From A Fan
I enjoyed receiving this message on soundcloud today…
“wtf happened to your somebody that i used to know/dead wrong mashup? i listen to it like daily. it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to my ears. and i can no longer find it. this is really depressing. i’m a bartender and solely based on that mix i have introduced soooooo many DJs to your sound cloud. it makes me not hate gyote. literally best mix involving that song EVER. bring it back. or put it on iTunes. or send me a CD with it on there. or email it to me. send me a carrier pigeon that can somehow sing it. please. pretty pretty please.”
The Melker Project 2 – Coming Soon!
If you ever wondered what one of my mixes looks like, this should give you a pretty good idea!
The first Melker Project mix was composed entirely on turntables, before I knew how to use Ableton. It took me months. I thought it would be easier if I recorded into Ableton this time – not so much… it still took months! This project has actually been “completed” for almost 6 months – I have been waiting for the perfect moment to release it. What do you guys think? Soon?
FLOSSTRADAMUS AND DJ SLIINK – “TEST ME” VS. MAXIME QUOILIN
Dj Sliink from Maxime Quoilin on Vimeo.
I love this song. And I love the work of Maxime Quoilin. I watched this video weeks ago, but never thought to post it on the blog. I was being stupid. Maxime randomly met up with Sliink to shoot a quick video and ended up following him around for a day… this was the result. Awesome. My video better be next.
M83 – Midnight City (Cousin Culo Edit)
Every once in a while I hear a song and I think – f that, dude, I should have made this. Well, that’s how I feel about my buddy Cousin Cole’s new Moombahsoulish remix of Midnight City. I also wish that I had thought of giving myself a Puerto Rican pseudonym for producing latin-type remixes, but he did that first too. The Melker Projecto just doesn’t seem to have enough flava…
